GENIUS HOUR

WOW!  What a ride this project was.   I learned about Genius Hour at NCTIES and was very excited to start it with my class when I returned from the conference.   We are constantly telling our kids what they need to learn and they have very little choice in what they are learning.  This project is all them, they came up with their passion project.  We did several weeks of brainstorming and developing driving questions.  Once the students had their driving question they were off to do some research.   My students worked at their own pace and decided how much effort to put into the project. After the research portion of the project, the students how to chose how to present their information. Each student decided what they wanted to do.  Some explored iMovie and made incredible videos. Others wanted to dive into Google Slides and make a presentation.   We even had some Bare books created that will be in the library for the check-out rotation.  Overall, I am really proud of my kids. Laura-Ashleigh's Reflection

I have a lot of fun playing soccer.  I wanted to make a mini soccer game that would be fun to play.  I created my little game with a cardboard box and some paper people.  I think this game is going to be fun for people to play in pairs or by them selves.  They can kick the soccer ball and try to score a goal.   I had a lot of fun with Genius Hour.

Will's Reflection

My project was about making mine craft cookie cutters.  I used a program to design my cookie cutters and then printed them on the 3D printer.   I learned that you should not use chocolate chip cookie dough with these cookie cutters.  We had the best results with sugar cookie mix.  The creeper cookie cutter worked really well.   I would need to make the pic ax cookie cutter a little thicker so the dough does not get stuck.  I really think Genius Hour was awesome because I got to make my own project.  Next year, I think the third graders will love this project.
